Disabled N.J. Transit Train Creates Delays
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A disabled New Jersey Transit train blocked a tunnel just outside of New York's Penn Station on Wednesday evening, creating delays on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
New Jersey Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll told WCBS 880 that trains that pass through Penn Station were forced to travel down a single track. The disabled train has been cleared from the track and arrived at Penn Station. But there are residual delays of 30 to 60 minutes on all trains that use Penn Station, which includes those on the Northeast Corridor, the New Jersey Coastline and Midtown Direct.
Carroll said that many commuters had already left work before the train broke down.
"Our peak period has shifted today because it is an early getaway day," she said. "So a lot of the regular commuters that usually leave between 5 and 8 kind of bump up their normal departure time to earlier in the evening, so that's why we run those early getaway extra trains earlier in the afternoon."
