Did Mets' Twitter Account Mock Yanks' Injuries? Team Claims It Didn't
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets' Twitter account posted, but then later removed, a tweet on Monday night that seemed to take a shot at injured Yankees Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
With a picture of some Mets doing their pregame stretching before their series opener with the Atlanta Braves, the tweet read: "Don't forget to stretch those quads before coming out to Citi Field!"
Jeter and Rodriguez are both currently sidelined due to Grade 1 quad strains, so the tweet -- which was unintentional, according to the Mets -- does poke at the ailing Yankees lineup. Jeter was placed on the 15-day DL and A-Rod's return to the lineup has been halted.
"There was no ill will or intent," a Mets spokesman said in a statement. "The person who sent the tweet had no idea about the Yankees' injuries."
The public-relations disaster was avoided after the tweet was deleted from the account. And whether or not the club's social media department intended for the tweet to be about the injured Yankees, the Mets opted to play it safe and save themselves from possible scrutiny.
The Bronx Bombers have been hampered by injuries all season. The Mets, meanwhile, who have been known to be an injury-riddled franchise in past years, have remained relatively healthy this season.
