Dharun Ravi To Receive Sentence On Monday In Rutgers' Webcam Spy Trial
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Sentencing day is tomorrow for the former Rutgers student convicted of spying on his gay roommate.
Dharun Ravi faces up to 10 years in prison.
Ravi was convicted of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation for using a webcam to watch Tyler Clementi's encounter with another man. Clementi later committed suicide.
The jury reached a split verdict during its third day of deliberations in mid-March. Each bias intimidation charge included five questions. A finding of guilty on any of them made Ravi guilty of the entire charge.
The jury issued a split verdict on those sub-questions, finding him not guilty on some sub-parts of some counts, but guilty of all 15 counts as a whole.
Ravi was also found guilty of witness and evidence tampering, attempted invasion of privacy and hindering apprehension or prosecution.
Ravi's supporters say that he shouldn't spend any time behind bars. They claim that he shouldn't have been tried under the bias-intimidation law.
