Dharun Ravi Apologizes For 'Insensitive' And 'Stupid' Choices In Webcam Spying Incident
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The ex-Rutgers student convicted of spying on his roommate's sexual encounter with another man inside their dorm room expressed regret and apologized Tuesday.
Last week Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He used his web camera to spy on Tyler Clementi in September of 2010. Clementi later committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.
"I accept responsibility for and regret my thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices that I made on September 19, 2010 and September 21, 2010," Ravi said in a statement.
The statement continued on to say "My behavior and actions, which at no time were motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice or desire to hurt, humiliate or embarrass anyone, were nonetheless the wrong choices and decisions. I apologize to everyone affected by those choices."
Ravi was convicted in March on 15 criminal counts, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation. He was sentenced to a 30-day jail term, three years of probation, 300 hours of community service and ordered to pay a fine of $10,000 towards a program to help victims of bias crimes.
Sources told CBS 2 that Ravi won't appeal his sentence and will report to jail this week.
