Cheshire Home Invasion Trial: Confession Tape Of Accused Joshua Komisarjevsky Released
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- For the first time in four years the public is hearing the voice of Cheshire home invasion suspect Joshua Komisarjevsky.
As CBS 2's Derricke Dennis reports, the police confession tapes give a glimpse of what was going on inside his mind as he described the details of that horrible day back in July 2007.
"We were just supposed to get the money, get in and get out," Komisarjevsky said.
Komisarjevsky clearly pinned the decision to kill Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley and Michaela, on his partner, Steven Hayes.
"I'm not killing anybody. I'm not going to," Komisarjevsky is heard saying. "He was, well, then I'll kill the two daughters and you kill the mom, and I was like I'm not killing anyone.
"It's not gonna happen. I can't. I didn't want to kill anyone."
But the mother and daughters did die that day, after an hours-long ordeal that started with an invasion and robbery of their home in Cheshire, Conn., and the bludgeoning of father and husband, Dr. William Petit.
"I hit him in the head with the baseball bat, and he let out this unearthly scream," Komisarjevsky said. "We both ended up tying him up. Mr. Hayes tied his hands and I tied his feet."
The taped confession describes a waiting game, waiting for the bank to open so that Hawke-Petit could withdraw $15,000 in cash, and then worry over whether the suspects could slip up and leave DNA evidence behind.
"He was just going on an on about DNA, and even a drop of sweat or, um, a hair falling off your head is enough to put us in jail, because they have DNA on our record," Komisarjevsky said.
In the end, a weak and beaten Dr. Petit managed to escape, but his wife and daughters were killed. The mom was strangled and the daughters died as a result of the fire set in their house, something Komisarjevsky said he never wanted to happen.
"They did what they were supposed to do. There was no reason for them to die. They were compliant the entire way, both very bright young ladies, even the mother didn't deserve to die," he said.
The 90-minute confession was released Monday, right at the start of Komisarjevsky's murder trial.
Hayes has already been convicted and sentenced to death in the murders.
