Dept. Of Justice Turns Up Heat On Suffolk PD Over Hate Crimes Against Latinos

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- After a two-year investigation, the Justice Department is urging the Suffolk County Police Department to change procedures for hate crime investigations involving Latinos. The feds cite the case of Marcelo Lucero.

The Ecuadorean immigrant was beaten and stabbed to death in November 2008 in Patchogue in a racially-motivated hate crime.

Seven teenagers were arrested. His killer, Jeffrey Conroy, was convicted of manslaughter.

The feds want better hate crime reporting and improved tracking of complaints against police. County Executive Steve Levy issued the following statement:

"Some recommendations are constructive and will be implemented; many others we are already doing, and some we disagree with," Levy said.
