Customers Accuse Delta Gas Station In South Orange Of Overcharging

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A gas station in New Jersey is accused of overcharging its customers at the pump.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, it was the last place Christa expected to be cheated: her local Delta Gas Station at 451 Irvington Ave. in South Orange.

But last month, she said the attendant purposely overcharged her credit card.

"When he brought me the receipt, I realized that it seemed a little high. So I looked at the pump and realized he had charged me exactly $5 over," she said.

She said when she confronted the attendant, "There was no dispute. He fixed the error quickly by offering me cash."

Tracy Tyson, of Maplewood, said the same attendant tried to pull the same scam on her last week, Carrasco reported.

"I checked the pump and it said $37 and he charged me $42," Tyson said. "I called him over and I said I thought it was $37 and he looked and he was like, oh and again he pulled out $5 and he didn't even think about it."

Several residents in the area with similar stories have taken to a community Facebook page to warn others about the gas station.

When Carrasco went to the gas station, a man claiming to be the manager denied ripping off customers.

Carrasco: Do you know anything about this?

Manager: No, my gas station? No problems.

Carrasco: No? You haven't been overcharging customers?

Manager: No complaints at my gas station.

CBS2 spoke with another man by phone who claimed to be the owner. He said his business isn't doing anything wrong.

But the Delta gas station has been in trouble before. According to the New Jersey attorney general, the station was fined for mixing premium and regular gas.

The South Orange Police Department said they have had reports of customer disputes at the gas station before, but nothing recently that has warranted any type of investigation.
