Report: Perez Survives Cut, Moves To Mets' Bullpen
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Oliver Perez is inching closer and closer to the end of his Mets' career.
Mets manager Terry Collins met with general manager Sandy Alderson on Wednesday to make a decision on the 29-year-old.
According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, "most decision-makers believe that it is time to cut Perez." Instead, the Mets decided to give Perez a shot at the wide-open lefty specialist competition.
"According to a source, the end will most likely come after two relief appearances," wrote Martino, "provided those appearances are not shockingly stellar."
Oliver Perez allowed his first four batters to reach and gave up three runs in the first before settling down with two scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. Not the type of outing that gave the Mets confidence.
Perez, when asked if he should get one more start, replied, "What do you think? Yes."
Coming off an 0-5 record with a 6.80 ERA last season, Perez is owed $12 million in the final season of his contract.
"I'm ready for everything," Perez said. "We have to talk first. I feel real good starting games, like I have all my career."
