Dead Animals Found In Trash Bags Along Interstate In Rye

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- State police are investigating after authorities said eight trash bags filled with dead animals were found near an interstate junction in Westchester County.

The bags were found Monday by highway workers on a ramp connecting Interstates 95 and 287 in Rye, police said. The bags were filled with animal bones and decomposing bodies, according to investigators.

Police said decomposition made it hard to tell what the other animals were and to make an accurate count, but said it appears the dumping has been going on for some time.

State police investigator Joseph Becerra calls the case disturbing.

The case is similar to the discovery three months ago of 35 dead animals in trash bags a few miles away.

In April, 35 dead animals, including dogs, cats and a pet lizard, were found in dozens of trash bags dumped along the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison.

A Bronx veterinarian, Dr. Andrew Manesis, has been charged in that case. He's accused of dumping the remains of euthanized pets along the road. Owners had paid Manesis to have their pets cremated, police said.

Investigators said no connection between the two incidents has been established.
