Mayor De Blasio Claims 'Summer All Out' Initiative Is Keeping Violence Down
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio says the NYPD's "Summer All Out" initiative is off to a strong start.
A spike in violent crime pushed the NYPD to quickly muster 300 volunteer officers from desk jobs to street duty in troubled precincts, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

"The initiative started on June 8," de Blasio said. "Shootings are now down nearly 30 percent in the 'Summer All Out' precincts combined. So just over a month, shootings down 30 percent in those precincts."
Chief of Department James O'Neill told Bronx residents "Total number of crimes is down 2.9 percent year to date. That includes a drop in murders of 6.4 percent and a drop in shooting incidents of 9.9 percent."

Residents in the 47th Precinct, one of the targets of the "Summer All Out" initiative, cheered at the news, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
Inspector Raul Stephenson said the improvement comes with help from the community as well.
"I don't have a cop that I can put on every street corner," he said. "I do know I have community members that I can tap into as a resource."
De Blasio proclaimed that New York City is the safest big city in American and will continue to be.
