Days Are Numbered For Connecticut's System Of Marking Highway Exits
GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Prepare for a little adjustment, Connecticut. Your highway exit numbers are about to be shuffled.
As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, exit numbers are currently consecutive. For example, on I-84, you start with Exit 1 in Danbury and increase all the way up to 74 in Union.
The federal government wants Connecticut to get in line with most of the country, which means highway exits that correspond to mileage.
Days Are Numbered For Connecticut's Old Way Of Marking Highway Exits
On I-395, for instance, the old Exit 76 could soon become the new Exit 1.
On the Merritt Parkway, Bruce Stevenson isn't too worried about the changes.
"No inconvenience and neutral on if it's a good idea," he said. "I'll remember the old as long as I am driving on the road."
"Wouldn't really make a difference to me," another driver told Adams. "When people ask directions, I give them the name of the road to get off at, and I'm sure they got it right."
I-395 will switch soon, followed by I-95 and Route 8. The state will ease into the transition slowly over 20 years, making changes only when it's time to replace exit signs.
Old exit numbers will still be indicated for two years after the change.
