NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The Riverside Church community took time on Sunday to remember Doctor Martin Luther King's legacy.

It was a day of worship, music, and song intended to honor the life of Doctor King.
Dr. King gave a memorable speech at the Riverside Church a year before he was assassinated. In the speech 'Beyond Vietnam' Dr. King condemned what he called the triple evils of racism, economic exploitation, and militarism.
The message of Sunday's service was that tomorrow is not a holiday and that there is still a lot of work to be done, 1010 WINS reported.
"When you understand what the dream was, dad wanted to eradicate poverty, racism, militarism, and violence from our society," Dr. King's son Martin Luther King III said.
In the spirit of that message a number of volunteer events were planned for Monday. Volunteers will be able to participate in a number of cleaning and maintenance projects at city recreation centers around the five boroughs.
Outside of St. Patrick's Cathedral Cardinal Timothy Dolan praised Dr. King as a great American and said that the holiday provided a perfect opportunity to serve others.
He said that Dr. King stood for civil rights in its broadest form.
"He spoke so compellingly about the dignity of the human person and about the sacred responsibility Americans have to reach out to anyone suffering any kind of injustice," Dolan said.
