Daily News: Damon's Return To Yankees 'Unlikely'
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- The Yankees have had an uncharacteristically difficult offseason heading into 2011, unable to sway many sought after free agents toward the Bronx. A New York fan favorite may be the next to spurn the Bombers.
The Yankees have turned their attention toward a reunion with Johnny Damon, reports Newsday. However, a conflicting report from the NY Daily News labels the potential signing as "unlikely."
According to Newsday, the Yankees have had "multiple conversations" with Damon about returning to the Bronx.
The Daily News refuted Newsday's report, saying Damon is "unlikely" to accept less playing time to return to New York, citing an unnamed source close to the veteran left fielder.
Damon would likely serve as a part-time left fielder and DH for the Yankees, a workload that may be too light for the fan favorite.
"There just isn't enough playing time," said the Daily News' source. "In two years, maybe. But he still wants to play right now."
According to Newsday, the Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers are also interested in Damon.
Damon became a free agent last offseason when his $52 million, four-year contract with the Yankees expired. He wanted a long-term deal at the same average salary, but the Yankees weren't interested. Damon ultimately signed with the Detroit Tigers.
Damon hit .286 with 24 homers for the Yankees in 2009.
