Cuomo Wants Minimum Wage Raised To $15 Per Hour
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke to a packed audience at the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York Sunday, calling on the state's minimum wage to be raised.
WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports the governor talked about how impossible it is for people to live who are making the current minimum wage of $9 per hour. Cuomo said minimum wage should be raised to $15 per hour.
"What at one time was a decent salary, you can't even live on anymore and then you have a child who wants to go to college," Cuomo said. "Forget it. I mean, how do you even afford it?"
The governor also talked about family leave. Currently, the Family Leave Act allows workers to take off for 12 weeks to be with a sick loved one or new baby, but that time is not paid.
"Mother wants to be home with a baby, father wants to be home with a baby. They should be. Enjoy that time," Cuomo said.
Cuomo supports family paid leave.
