Cuomo Continues Push For Hike In New York's Minimum Wage
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Pitching his budget proposals to an audience at City College on Wednesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said one of his top priorities is raising the state's minimum wage.
"Housing alone is more than the entire cost of minimum wage," he said.
New York's minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour.
Cuomo Backs Hiking New York's Minimum Wage
"We are out of pace with other states in the northeast that pay a higher minimum wage. We propose raising the minimum wage to $8.75 an hour. It's the right thing to do," he said. "It's the fair thing to do and it is long overdue."
Dean Skelos, the Republican leader of the State Senate, said he agrees.
He once rejected the idea, but said yesterday that his caucus will consider the governor's proposal now that New York's economy is improving.
