Govs Agree To Increase Security In N.Y., N.J. In Response To Rising Global Terror Threat
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have ordered an unprecedented heavier police presence on commuter rail lines, subways, bus stations, airports and bridge and tunnel crossings.
On Wednesday, the governors signed a Memorandum of Understanding, coordinating their law enforcement and intelligence gathering agencies.

The move comes amid an increased threat of international terrorist activity.
"There is no border between New York and New Jersey when it comes to public safety," Cuomo said.
Although there is no specific threat to the area, Christie said, "this is something that's absolutely necessary for us to do in light of the new and increased tensions."

"The New York City area has always been a top target for terrorists wishing to spread hatred and fear, and we would be in a state of denial to say that what is going on internationally has not raised that danger," Cuomo stated. "That is why New York and New Jersey are increasing our level of partnership and cooperation -- because public safety is paramount and joining together is the best way to defend against any possible dangers. Our residents should rest assured that we are doing everything necessary to keep the region safe."
The agreement will substantially increase security all across our area, including at bridges and tunnels and airports, and at transportation hubs like Penn Station, Grand Central and PATH, CBS 2's Dick Brennan reported.
The public will also see an increase in Emergency Service officers with heavy weapons, more bag checks and K-9 patrols, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said his agency will be committing dozens of uniformed troopers to patrol train platforms and trains.
"This collaboration is not the result of any one threat. We're operationg as a result of an uptick in terrorist activitiy all around the world," D'Amico said.
Up to 500 National Guard members will also be mobilized, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
"All of the mass transit agencies and the Port Authority (are) stepping up the visible presence of law enforcement," Christie said. "We're hoping that's going to have two effects: the first and most important is deterrent and the second is a calming effect on the folks who are obviously seeing the news that's being reported every day."
The governors said the security uptick will remain as intelligence is analyzed.
"It depends on what happens, depends on what the future holds," Cuomo said.
The bi-state agreement comes nine days after Christie and Cuomo met with Mayor Bill de Blasio and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to discuss security plans.
