Cuomo: $5.9M To Restore Sandy-Damaged S.I. Beaches
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Some beaches on Staten Island damaged by Superstorm Sandy are getting some restoration help.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state is targeting $5.9 million toward raising sand levels including dune restoration at New Dorp Beach, South Beach, Cedar Grove and Oakwood.
"This restoration work is imperative for the protection of residential communities on Staten Island that have become more vulnerable to future storms as a result of Sandy's unprecedented destruction," Cuomo said in a statement. "I am pleased that this work is beginning, which will restore the natural barriers that are so important to protect our residents and communities during severe storms."
The contract for the work is expected to be given out shortly, with the work to start soon after it has been awarded. The funding is coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Cuomo announced the project on Saturday.
