CT Teen's Life Celebrated On Anniversary Of Prom-Day Stabbing
MILFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The Connecticut high school where a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death a year ago Saturday celebrated her life with a day of art, activities and music.
The event at Jonathan Law High School in Milford honored Maren Sanchez, who was killed in a school hallway on April 25, 2014. A classmate has been charged with her murder.
Principal Fran Thompson says Maren was beloved by the school community and the idea of the daylong event is to remember her as she would have wanted, with smiles and joy. Organizers planned a kickball tournament, a road race and music from live bands.
The day started with a 5K and 18 bounce houses were set up on the school's softball field.
"She would have loved it," friend Phoebe Hebert said.
"Even yesterday while they were setting up some of our friends went and jumped on them and got yelled at. That would have been her, that would have been her on the bouncy houses during school, having fun," another friend, Darby Hudd, said.
The defendant, Christopher Plaskon, has pleaded not guilty to murder. His attorney has indicated he is planning an insanity defense.
