NEW CITY, NY (WCBS 880) - Overall, statistics show that crime is down in the northern suburbs, with just a few exceptions.

According to New York state figures, Westchester County saw an 8 percent drop in one year with reductions in nearly every major category.
Rockland County saw a 5 percent decline overall. Violent crime dropped 3 percent, but burglaries jumped 19 percent.
In Orangetown, some residents have hired private security. Others are forming block watch programs.
On the whole, police say they're focusing on quality of life issues, community policing, and they're targeting some of the major problems like guns, gangs, and drugs.
