Crews To Demolish Storm-Wrecked Homes In Mantoloking
MANTOLOKING, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Work crews are preparing to demolish storm-damaged homes in the Jersey shore town that was hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.
Some debris removal has already started in Mantoloking and the first of 50 storm-wrecked houses should be demolished on Wednesday, a day later than originally anticipated. Debris will be cleared from another 43 homes.
The lack of an air quality monitoring team prevented the tear-down of a house on Tuesday. It sits near the Mantoloking Bridge, where the surge from Sandy cut a new channel from the ocean to the Barnegat Bay. That channel has since been filled in.
Last week, crews demolished a house that was swept into Barnegat Bay during the Oct. 29 storm. The home was one of eight nearly intact residences that were pushed into bays from the storm.
All of Mantoloking's 521 homes were either damaged or destroyed by the storm.
Mantoloking will be one of the Jersey shore spots visited next week by Britain's Prince Harry. He'll be making several stops across the U.S. in support of veterans' charities.
