Crews Begin To Install Glass At World Trade Center Transportation Hub
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The opening of the new World Trade Center transportation hub is moving closer to reality as construction crews have begun to install its first pieces of glass.
Steven Plate, the head of World Trade Center construction for the Port Authority, told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell that more than 700 5-foot-by-10-foot panels are being installed over the next several months.
"All high-end glass, over an inch thick," he described. "Each piece weighs over a thousand pounds."

Each of the panels is being lifted by a crane.
With glass rising 100 feet, the interior of the space will be bathed in natural light.
"The light itself is a tremendous benefit," Plate said.
Plate said he believes the nearly $4 billion hub will rival Grand Central Terminal in architectural beauty.
It is expected to open next year.
