Big Apple Circus Performers Escape Injury After Camper Dangles Off I-287
MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two performers with the Big Apple Circus escaped injury when their pickup truck overturned and left their camper dangling off a busy roadway in New Jersey.
The accident happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday on I-287 in Mahwah.
The acrobats, who are part of a double trapeze act known as The Mongolian Angels, were on their way from Walden, N.Y. to a show in Virginia when they lost control of the vehicle.
"The RV started fishtailing and the camper flipped over and almost went over the side into a ravine," Joel Dein, Director of Communications for the circus, told 1010 WINS.
The truck-bed was left hanging off the overpass with nothing but trees and a canal below, CBS 2 reported.
I-287 was shut down south of Route 17 as authorities worked to safely remove the vehicle. The road reopened around 1 p.m.
Dein said the performers were not injured and continued to their destination in other vehicles.
The Mongolian Angels are part of the circus' new show called "Luminosity" which opens in Dulles, Va. next week and comes to Lincoln Center on Oct. 23, Dein said.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
