New York City Council Minority Leader Vincent Ignizio To Resign

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Vincent Ignizio, the minority leader of the New York City Council and one of its only three Republicans, will be resigning his post.

Ignizio announced Friday that he'll be leaving this summer. He has represented his Staten Island district for eight years.

He will become the chief executive officer of Catholic Charities of Staten Island.

Ignizio called the decision to leave "bittersweet." He said he's proud of the council's accomplishments.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will call for a special election to replace Ignizio.

The resignation was first reported by The Staten Island Advance.

Ignizio is the second council member to announce his resignation this month.

Mark Weprin of Queens is leaving to become Gov. Andrew Cuomo's deputy secretary of legislative affairs.
