Council Member Wants NYC Alternate Side Violation Sticker Ban Despite Poll Results
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you ever got one of those city parking stickers slapped on your window because you violated alternate side rules, you know how difficult it is to get it off your car.
A new poll, however, says a majority of New Yorkers like the sticker policy, even though the City Council recently voted to get rid of it.
A Quinnipiac University survey found that 60 percent of city voters support the stickers.
Council Member David Greenfield of Brooklyn sponsored the bill to get rid of the stickers.
"This is the kind of violation you do accidentally. So in return, we put this punitive, ugly, greenish, yellowish sticker that is impossible to remove and can deface your car. It's just not fair, it's not something that we should be doing in today's day and age," he told 1010 WINS on Thursday.
Despite the poll numbers, Greenfield says there are plenty of New Yorkers angry about getting the Sanitation Department stickers plastered on their car.
He says he thinks Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has vowed to veto the measure, should listen to the "will of very frustrated New Yorkers.
"It's tough enough living in New York City, we don't have to make it any more difficult by having the City of New York deface your private property," he said.
The City Council voted unanimously in January to get rid of the stickers.
