Council Committee To Vote On Expansion Of NYU's Greenwich Village Campus On Tuesday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - New York City officials will vote this month on a hotly contested plan to add four new buildings to New York University's Greenwich Village campus.
Administrators said that the university must add new facilities to attract top students and professors, but critics -- including faculty members and actor Matthew Broderick -- said the planned expansion would damage the quality of life in the Village.
Broderick told a City Council hearing last month that the plan is too big, and that it changes the neighborhood's character.
The "Ferris Bueller's Day Off'' star was among hundreds of foes who testified at the hearing. Construction workers and NYU officials spoke in favor.
A council committee will vote on the proposal on Tuesday. The full council is expected to vote on July 25.
NYU is the nation's largest private university. It has more than 50,000 students.
