Coughlin Says Giants Are Playing For Newtown
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Tom Coughlin, the players and the entire New York Giants organization are deeply affected by the Newtown Elementary tragedy.
The Giants are set to take the field against the Atlanta Falcons wearing S.H.E.S. on the back of their helmets. Coughlin revealed that the players, himself and his assistants observed their own moment of silence on Saturday.
His players including Victor Cruz are honoring the victims in their own ways. Cruz is wearing cleats and gloves with the name of Jack Pinto, a six-year-old boy taken in the tragedy who idolized Cruz.
Coughlin spoke to ESPN's Rachel Nichols on Sunday.
"Our hearts go out to the families," Coughlin told Nichols. "To have this happen, it's almost beyond explanation."
"My only thought there was as a New York Giant family, we should all rise and have a moment of silence recognizing the families of these children, the families of the principal, the people at the school that were killed, just to recognize the fact that our hearts are so saddened by this event. The senseless killing — it's very difficult to get past the senseless killing of children," Coughlin said.
Coughlin himself, is wearing the initials S.H.E.S. on his hat next to the Giants' logo.
