Cops, Widow Hope Surveillance Footage Will Break 2011 Cold Case Murder
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A brutal 2011 murder in the Bronx left a widow searching for answers.
Now, clues in the unsolved case could fuel a renewed effort to catch a killer, CBS 2's John Slattery reported Friday.
Rose and Eddie Harkom's life together began and ended in a Gerard Avenue home in the shadow of Yankee Stadium.
"Death do us part and we had to part like that. We married for life and that's how it was going to be," Rose said, "We had a poodle and he was with that poodle when he died."
Eddie Harkom was walking the couple's dog in October 2011. That is when the nightmare started. Harkom never returned home and Rose received a life-changing house call.
"I heard a loud knock on the door, like pounding. So, I'm shaking like this and when I open the door there was two cops standing there," she said.
Police escorted an already frightened Rose to a nearby ambulance where her husband was clinging to life.
"He showed me the bloody shirt and I couldn't take much more of that," Rose recalled.
CBS 2 recently obtained grainy surveillance video from a security camera in the area where Eddie was found.
"We got video from across the street that showed a dark figure approaching from behind as Mr. Harkom was walking his dog," Det. Frank Orlando explained.
Moments later the same individual is seen running in the opposite direction. Detectives believe that he could be the killer.
Rose said she still finds the murder incomprehensible.
"It was horrible. Why would you kill an innocent man walking a dog?" she wondered.
Authorities have continued to appeal to the public for information.
"We're looking for people to come forward with any information they have," Det. Orlando said.
Posters have been placed throughout the neighborhood. Rose said she remains hopeful that a $12,000 award will be enough to convince someone to come forward with information.
