Cops: Suspect Fled With Victim's Cell Phone Following Failed Rape Attempt

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD has asked the public for help in identifying and locating a man wanted in connection with an attempted rape and robbery in Washington Heights.

At 10:30 p.m. on Monday March 10, a 31-year-old woman entered her building at the same time as an unknown man, police said.

The man lingered in the hallway while the victim checked her mail. As the victim began to walk to her apartment the suspect approached her, went through her pockets, and took her cellphone.

The victim took her cellphone back and the suspect backed off, according to authorities. The victim continued to her apartment and the suspect ran in behind her. Police said the man attempted to remove the victim's shirt and pants, prompting the victim to fight back and yell.

The suspect, described as a 5' 7" Hispanic male, took off with the victim's phone. He was last seen wearing a beige coat with a black hooded sweatshirt underneath.
