Suspect Charged In Connection With Attempted Rape In SoHo
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Just hours after police released a new surveillance video of a man wanted in the attempted rape of an NYU student in SoHo, a suspect has been charged in the attack.
Glenn Williams, 28, of Scarsdale, was charged Wednesday with first-degree attempted rape, first- and second-degree robbery, sexual abuse, and assault, police said.
As CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported, the charges were handed down after Williams was questioned Wednesday afternoon at the NYPD Special Victims Unit.
Earlier Wednesday, the NYPD released surveillance video taken in a subway station, showing clear images of the suspect wanted in the 1:15 a.m. attack on Oct. 8.
The 20-year-old NYU student was walking on Thompson Street between Prince and Spring streets, about half a mile from the school's campus, when police said a man walked up to her and attacked.
"She was approached by an individual from behind, punched in the head and he attempted to drag her into an area," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said last week.
The college student was then dragged between two cars, where police said she was groped by the suspect.
He allegedly tried to go further, but she fought back and he took off, escaping to the lobby of a nearby building.
That was where a camera caught him holding the female victim's purse, and then using his jacket to cover it up.
People in the trendy, upscale neighborhood were still startled Wednesday by the attempted rape.
"I think that's scary to think that someone was just taken off the street," said SoHo resident Michelle Jessen.
"I can't even imagine," said NYU student Pooja Shah. "She was my age too and it just scares me so much."
"It's unheard of," said businessman Emmett Burke. "This is the best neighborhood in Manhattan. It's a quiet SoHo street."
Court information for Williams was not immediately available.
