"Lorenzo Fuentes was thrown a significant distance from where we believe the point of the impact was," police Detective Robert Chase told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.
Fuentes was declared dead at the scene by the Suffolk County medical examiner's office.
The detective said vehicle parts were left at the scene.
"We're looking for a 2014 or 2015 Jeep Cherokee," Chase said. "There should be damage around the passenger headlight area, passenger mirror area, the fender, hood and possibly windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle."
The Jeep is silver, Chase said. Police said anyone with information should call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
Fuentes was married with seven children and was a grandfather. He held several jobs, niece Sandra Fuentes said, including one at Hyde Park Mouldings in Hauppauge.
"He was a great uncle, a great son, a father," said Sandra Fuentes, 24, of Central Islip. "He was always there for other people. His laugh will always be memorable to everyone, and God bless him."
Fuentes emigrated from El Salvador about 20 years ago. "He was always around his community," his niece said. "He is best known around Central Islip. He was outgoing, always talkative."
