Cops: 3 Hurt After Woman Intentionally Drives Into Crowd Outside New Cassel Hall

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 35-year-old woman faces charges of assault and reckless endangerment after Nassau County police said she ran down three women with her car in New Cassel early Friday.

Police said Shannon Chambers was punched in the left eye after a verbal altercation with three women turned physical at a private party at American Legion Post 1861 on Prospect Avenue around 2:30 a.m.

Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack told 1010 WINS Chambers was agitated and left the hall stating, "I'm coming back, I'm coming back right now."

Lack said Chambers got into her car, went in the wrong direction on Prospect Avenue and intentionally drove the car up onto the sidewalk into a crowd of 20 people, striking three women – ages 25, 39 and 45.

The car then hit a telephone pole and a fence outside the hall.

Lack said officers from the Third Precinct saw Chambers backing up from the telephone pole, running over the 39-year-old victim a second time.

Chambers was arrested a short time later.

"Unfortunately, the defendant made such a chaotic scene it was very difficult to find out what the actual reason for the initial altercation was," Lack said. "The defendant should've walked away and called the police, instead of getting into her vehicle and taking the law into her own hands and driving into a crowd of 20 people."

Chambers and the three women were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The car has been impounded.

WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports police said Chambers was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The Huntington Station woman was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead.
