Convicted 'Hell On Horton Road' Murderer Admits To Crime Nearly 25 Years Later
VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Long Island man has for the first time taken responsibility for the 1989 death of his 13-year-old neighbor.
As CBS 2's Carolyn Gosoff reported, Robert Golub was convicted of luring then butchering his young neighbor in Valley Stream but insists he didn't intend to kill Kelly Ann Tinyes.
Richard Tinyes says the admission does nothing to ease the pain of the loss of his daughter.
"It's like reliving it all over again. It's like day one," Richard Tinyes told Gusoff.
In a just-released transcript of last month's parole hearing, Golub gives his version of the infamous "Hell On Horton Road" case.
Transcripts from the hearing show Golub admitted being on steroids at the time of the murder.
He said he became angry when the teenager unexpectedly ran into his family's home.
The then-21-year-old bodybuilder was home with his younger brother when he said he collided with Kelly Ann, causing her to fall down the staircase.
She became unconscious before he suffocated her, according to Golub's admission.
"It was kind of crazy, but my mindset was...I felt like she was imposing on me," Golub said, according to the transcript. "All of a sudden, this happened to me. I became angry."
Golub said he panicked and the suffocation was unintentional.
Instead of calling somebody for help, "I took her by the ankle and pulled her through the house, and her jacket, and her shirt, and everything rode up," Golub told the parole board.
He said he slapped her to try to wake her.
"The slaps became punches, the punches, kicks. I acted horrendously that day," he said.
He also admitted his "steroid use was ridiculous."
"He always professed his innocence," Golub's trial attorney Salvatore Marinello said.
The attorney said Golub rejected a "roid rage" defense.
Authorities say Tinyes was stabbed, strangled and sexually mutilated.
"He's a horrible monster," Vicki Tinyes, Kelly Ann's mother, told Gusoff.
"He says that her clothes worked their way around her body. They didn't. Why was her bra tied around her face? This is crazy," Richard Tinyes said.
The angel on top of their Christmas tree in memory of their daughter, Gusoff reported.
"I would...live every day in memory of that girl I killed," Golub told the parole board. "I'm just very, very sorry."
Kelly's parents called it an empty apology.
"This is an ongoing thing with us. Christmas is here, Kelly's not here," Richard Tinyes told Gusoff.
Golub was denied parole and is serving 25 years to life. The parole board cited the judge's comments at sentencing, calling this one of the most atrocious crimes in memory.
Golub will be eligible for parole every two years. The Tinyes family said they will testify each time for keep him in prison.
