Construction Worker Shot On The Job In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A construction worker is in critical condition Monday after being shot while on the job in Brooklyn.
"I heard someone yelling, 'Don't move, don't move,' so then I run down the block and when I look I see this young man on the floor," neighbor Elicia Alcocks told CBS2's Alice Gainer.
Alcocks was busy running her daycare Monday morning when she heard three gunshots and ran outside to see what happened. She saw a 21-year-old man on the ground who was losing a lot of blood.
"A neighbor ran inside and got a towel and I took the towel and I applied pressure to the wound, but there was blood coming from somewhere else... which it looked like he got shot two other times," she said.
Someone else grabbed some towels and applied pressure to the other wounds until EMS arrived.
"I was feeling like I wanted to cry and I figured that I couldn't cry because that's not what he needs to hear, someone sobbing over him, so I had to hold it in but I was like, 'Oh my God,'" Alcocks said.
Officials said the incident appears to be a robbery.
"He was robbed and looks like taken to the ground and robbed, and the male took off in a cream-colored car. We're looking for him now. Definitely a robbery," NYPD Chief Robert Boyce said.
The 21-year-old, identified by family as Amandeep Singh, was shot three times in the stomach around 11 a.m. Police said a man came up to Singh demanding his gold chain and witnesses said the suspect was also interested in the victim's bag he had with him.
Singh works for New York City Chrysler Building Corp.
On Monday afternoon, the work truck was still parked at the scene as police scoured the area of Shepherd Avenue and Belmont Avenue for evidence in the East New York section of Brooklyn. Alcocks said though several people called 9-11, no one was immediately coming to the man's aid, so she jumped in.
"That could've been my child… that's someone's child, you know, we have to take care of our neighborhood," she said.
Singh's uncle told CBS2 he's still in surgery at Brookdale Hospital. Police are still looking for the suspect.
