Authorities said around 1:30 a.m. Friday, Victor Schultz, 49, was helping a co-worker load a milling machine onto a trailer on the side of Route 25A in Fort Salonga when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV.

Police said the driver never stopped.

"It's quite possible that because of the lighting conditions at the time and the late hour it is possible the driver is not aware that they had hit somebody," Sgt. John Twiname told WCBs 880's Sophia Hall.

Twiname said the roadway was not lit with special construction lighting at the time of the accident.

Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene. His co-worker was not injured.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
