Connecticut Unions Reviewing Vote That Sank Budget Deal

HARTFORD, CT (AP / CBSNewYork) - Connecticut state employee union leaders say they're reviewing a vote that rejected a labor savings deal as they look to halt layoffs that could affect thousands of workers.

Officials from the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition say they're considering allowing members to request another vote if they felt they were misinformed. They're also reviewing whether the voting system makes sense considering 57 percent of the members voted in favor of the failed agreement.

SEBAC labor negotiator Dan Livingston said Monday he knows Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy intends to pursue layoffs but he's hopeful a new agreement can be reached before people lose their jobs.

Malloy has said as many as 7,500 state employee layoffs would be needed to balance the budget after the workers rejected the agreement. The state has 45,000 unionized workers.
