Connecticut Lawmakers Look At Securing Weapons In Homes Of Mentally Ill
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - Following the Newtown massacre, a state legislative task force is working on a way to secure weapons in homes where people with mental illness reside.
In Newtown and shooter Adam Lanza, it was certainly the case - guns in the home easily available to a household resident plagued by mental illness.
St. Sen. Toni Harp is working on a legislative effort that would ask those seeking gun permits about anyone in the house with a mental condition.

"And if so, it would give the police department, the police chiefs, the ones who first sign off on the permits, a time to discuss with the person how they will secure those arms," Harp told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.
Harp said, however, some advocates for the mentally ill are opposed, arguing this classification on gun permits could lead to further stigma in an already stigmatized population.
"This is just an opportunity to notify someone that, if this is the case, you've got be particularly careful if granted a permit to carry," she said.
