Conn. Lawmakers Offer Mental Health Proposals In Response To Newtown Massacre
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A bipartisan legislative working group is calling for a new task force to study Connecticut's mental health system and make recommendations on ways to help 16- to 25-year-olds.
That's one of four consensus proposals lawmakers offered Tuesday.
They also recommended training for school staff to help identify mental illness and respond to psychiatric emergencies.
They did not reach consensus on other items, such as asking gun permit applicants whether anyone in their household is under the care of a mental health professional.
Members of the gun violence working group are scheduled to discuss Tuesday which consensus recommendations they plan to forward to legislative leaders, who will craft a final package of law changes in response to the Dec. 14 elementary school massacre in Newtown.
