Conflicting Reports Surface On Mike D'Antoni's Future With Knicks, Raptors
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Could Mike D'Antoni skip out on the Knicks?
According to the New York Daily News' Frank Isola, D'Antoni, entering his last year under contract with New York, "could emerge as a candidate in Toronto."
The Raptors announced Wednesday that Jay Triano will not return as coach next season.
Isola cited D'Antoni's strong history with Raptors president Bryan Colangelo -- the two worked together during the Phoenix Suns' run-and-gun era -- and sources that say Knicks president Donnie Walsh isn't sure he has the right man for the job.
"The Knicks have given no indication that they are open to negotiating a new deal with D'Antoni," wrote Isola. "Sources close to (Donnie) Walsh claim that the team president has privately questioned whether D'Antoni's system is the right fit for the Knicks."
The New York Post refuted Isola's report on Thursday.
"There's absolutely no truth to (Mike wanting to go to Toronto)," D'Antoni's agent, Warren LeGarie, told the paper. "It's amusing."
"According to a Raptors source late last night," added The Post, "Colangelo has no plans to ask the Knicks for permission to speak with D'Antoni."
Even if he wanted to reunite with Colangelo, D'Antoni might not be a good fit for Toronto.
Colangelo said on Wednesday he'd be interested in someone with a "defensive-minded perspective." D'Antoni was repeatedly criticized this season-- especially after acquiring Carmelo Anthony -- for his weak defensive output.
