Coney Island Parachute Jump Set To Light Up The Sky Come Summer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The lights along the Coney Island boardwalk are about to get a whole lot brighter. Thousands of LED lights are being outfitted for the Parachute Jump, an icon that has been in the dark since the 1960s.
The attraction can be seen from miles away and will soon be visible from space when all 270 feet of it are lit up with all of the colors of the rainbow.
"I'm so happy, it's about time. I'm so happy the Parachute Jump finally gets its recognition," Ken from Ocean Parkway told CBS 2's Vanessa Murdock.
Older residents said they remember riding the Parachute Jump before it shut down in the 1960s.
"It's too bad they can't get it to run as a ride," Stanley Fox said.
In addition to the new lights, the Parachute Jump is getting a fresh coat of paint ahead of the inaugural illumination on June 21.
