NYPD Gives Gifts To 12-Year-Old Girl Recovering From Broad Daylight Mugging
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Members of the NYPD brought gifts to the 12-year-old girl who was mugged in a broad daylight attack on Coney Island earlier this week.
The NYPD Community Affairs Bureau posted a photo on Twitter showing two officers with the girl, Keiri Quintero, and a goodie bag of gifts.
Quintero was on her way home from school Monday afternoon when she stopped to buy some cilantro for her mother and a cupcake for herself.
That's when a strange teen started following her.
"He tells me, 'Are you cold?' I didn't answer. In the middle of the street he says, 'seriously are you cold?' and I just kept walking straight," she told CBS2's Brian Conybeare.
Quintero stopped at a McDonald's, hoping he would leave her alone, but he didn't. Then, the encounter turned violent.
The teen grabbed her by the neck, pulled her into a dark alley and punched her in the face -- all for a plastic bag with cupcakes inside, and $3, Conybeare reported.
The girl was badly bruised but is expected to make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, police are searching for the suspect who is believed to be about 15 years old. He was seen on surveillance videos wearing black clothing, black and white sneakers and a black and red backpack with white stripes.
