Company Wants To Sell GM Salmon In U.S.
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Food safety groups were calling it "Frankenfish," genetically-engineered salmon that a high-tech company wants to sell in the U.S.
AquaBounty Technologies claims its technique, using growth hormone and genetically altered eggs, can grow full, market-size salmon in half the time as wild salmon.
Company officials said the engineered fish were perfectly safe, and were asking the FDA for approval.
"We can bring an industry back to the United States and provide Americans a safe and sustainable high quality seafood food material," said Ron Stotish, CEO of AquaBounty Technologies. "We think that the FDA hasn't done all of its homework yet and the company hasn't done all it's homework yet."
The FDA has not said when it will make its decision about the fish.
The agency already allows genetically-modified plants, such as corn and soybeans.
