NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you're planning to take the subway this weekend, expect a monkey wrench to be thrown into your plans.
Most people were taking the work in stride, but some were really unhappy.

"(Expletive). The problem is I'm not getting home on time," said one man, Eli. "It's disrupting. I know you've got to do track work, but they should have devised a better way to do this, you know?"
But as 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, the MTA said the work is a must, as part of the capital improvement program that will keep the trains running over the long haul.
Getting from one end of Manhattan to the other will make for a particularly annoying situation. The No. 1 train is shut down south of 14th Street, because of what published reports said is work at the shuttered Cortlandt Street station.
Students at Columbia University and City College will also run into a snag. Bronx-bound No. 1 trains are not stopping at the 103rd, 110th, 116th, 125th or 137th Street stations.
Meanwhile, downtown No. 1 trains are skipping the 28th, 23rd and 18th Street stations. But the No. 2 and No. 3 trains are running local between 34th Street-Penn Station and Chambers Street in both directions to serve those stations.
Taking the A train as an alternative might seem like a good idea, provided that you are not headed anywhere north of 168th Street. Throughout the month on weekends, the A train is not running between 168th Street and the 207th Street terminal, due to what published reports said was painting at the 175th Street station.
The C train is also shut down north of 145th Street.
On the East Side of Manhattan, Brooklyn-bound No. 4 trains are skipping the 138th Street-Grand Concourse station in the Bronx. At 149th Street-Grand Concourse, all trains board at the Woodlawn-bound platform.
The No. 5 train is not running into Manhattan at all this weekend. Trains will only run between the Dyre Avenue terminal and East 180th Street in the Bronx.
Meanwhile, Bronx-bound No. 6 trains are skipping the 23rd, 28th and 33rd Street stops during the overnight hours. Bronx-bound No. 4 trains are also skipping those stops during the overnight hours.
Also:
• On the No. 7 train, service is shut down between Willets Point and Flushing-Main Street in Queens. Shuttle bus service is available as an alternative.
• Queens-bound E trains are skipping the skip 36th St, Steinway St, 46th St, Northern Blvd and 65th St late nights.
• Franklin Avenue Shuttle S trains are not running at all.
• Queens-bound N train service is running on the Q tracks between Dekalb Avenue and Canal Street late nights. There will be no Queens-bound service at the Jay Street-MetroTech, Court Street, Whitehall Street, Rector Street, Cortlandt Street or City Hall stops.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn-bound N trains are running via the D line from 36th Street to Stillwell Avenue all weekend. Trains stop at 62nd St-New Utrecht Avenue.
• Queens-bound R trains are running from DeKalb Avenue to Canal Street all weekend, and like N trains, are not stopping at the Jay Street-MetroTech, Court Street, Whitehall Street, Rector Street, Cortlandt Street or City Hall stops.
Queens-bound R trains are also skipping the 36th Street, Steinway Street, 46th Street, Northern Boulevard and 65th Street stops all weekend.
• The J train is not crossing the East River at all. Free shuttle buses are providing alternate service from 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. between Hewes Street in and Essex Street in Manhattan, stopping at Marcy Avenue.
• On the F and G trains, the Smith-9th Street station is closed for rehabilitation. The F train is also running via the M between Roosevelt Avenue and 47th-50th streets.
• On the M train, the Central Avenue station is closed.
