Standardized Test Boycott Grows In New York
NORTH BELLMORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The statewide boycott of the new Common Core standardized tests is growing larger in New York as students head in for day two of the exams.
More than 300 students have refused to take them in Rockville Centre alone.
There are dozens more in the Middle Country, William Floyd, Mount Sinai, and Oceanside school districts, plus other districts across the state.
It's all part of statewide boycott in which some parents and teachers call the new exams abusive.
Common Core Boycott Grows In New York As Testing Continues
"These tests are not being used for educational purposes. They're strictly used to evaluate the teachers, evaluate the schools and to punish the teachers in schools," Jeanette Deutermann, a parent leading the effort, told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.
Deutermann said parents and educators need to take the testing system back from politicians.
"Parents and teachers have been taken out of the equation when it comes to what is best for our children and we feel that is the completely wrong way to go. We want to take it out of the hands of businesses and politicians," she said, adding that kids are being hurt.
"And it's taking the fun of learning out of our schools," she said.
