Commissioner Bratton Expects Lawsuits To Be Filed In Wake Of Eric Garner's Death

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police Commissioner Bill Bratton expects that a number of lawsuits will be filed in the wake of the death of a man in police custody.

A video of the incident shows an officer putting his arm around Eric Garner's neck as Garner is taken to the ground and his face is pushed into the sidewalk. Garner, before losing consciousness, is heard yelling repeatedly, "I can't breathe!"

Commissioner Bratton appeared on A.M. 970 on Sunday and said that he believes a federal case will be likely.

"I would not be surprised if they open one, but that usually runs also parallel to the criminal investigation. Then fourthly, there'll be a civil suit undoubtedly filed by the family of the deceased," he said, "There will be no quick resolution under the criminal law processes of this matter for months and months."

Bratton said that Internal Affairs is also investigating the case.
