Post Columnist Phil Mushnick Says Nets Might As Well Be Called 'Brooklyn N-Word'
By Brad Kallet
NEW YORK (WFAN) - For the first time in years, excitement is surrounding the Nets' franchise. Their move from New Jersey to Brooklyn is expected to bolster attendance figures and increase attention for an organization that has long been overlooked and forgotten about in the Tri-State area sports landscape.
Jay-Z, a part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets, was instrumental in the franchise's move to the outer borough. Though this team has yet to play a second in the brand new Barclays Center, the franchise already has a new feel to it -- a certain excitable "cool" that was never there in East Rutherford or in Newark.
New uniforms have been unveiled and a new culture is in store.
But controversial New York Post columnist Phil Mushnick, who has been notorious for criticizing such major players as WFAN's Mike Francesa and World Wrestling Entertainment's Vince McMahon, decided to take a stab at Jay-Z and the new-look Nets in his latest piece.
The comments that Mushnick made are causing quite a stir, and many are claiming that this time the writer went way over the line. The passage is below:
"As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots—what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new "urban" home—why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!"
Jay-Z is set to perform at the Barclays Center on Sept. 28.
