Collaborative Space Opens At Brooklyn Navy Yard
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A new manufacturing hub that will anchor the Brooklyn Navy Yard's Green Manufacturing Center had its grand opening on Thursday.
Macro Sea's New Lab will serve as a place where designers, engineers, academics and entrepreneurs can take their ideas from concept to prototype to production under one roof, according to developer David Belt.
"With the advent of the new technology in 3D printers and some of the other digital manufacturing techniques that are employed today, we no longer have this huge lag time between somebody making a product and somebody manufacturing a product," Belt told reporters including WCBS 880's Rich Lamb. "Both design can lead to manufacturing and the manufacturing can happen on-site."

New Lab is now 8,000 square feet, but will grow to 84,000 square feet by 2015 in a structure once used to manufacture parts for the battleships Arizona and Missouri.
"What we've done at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is take what came before us and grow it and build it," City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said. "Creating jobs that are going to be open to all New Yorkers, jobs that are creating actual things."
The 300-acre industrial park at the Brooklyn Navy Yard employs about 6,000 New Yorkers.
