Cold Weather May Hinder 2014 Super Bowl Halftime Show
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Beyoncé may have been sizzling hot in New Orleans, but the first cold-weather Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium may create a problem for performers.
There are no current plans for a halftime show during Super Bowl XLVIII because NFL officials are unsure how to stage the event in a cold-weather climate, a New York Post report said.
"The NFL is freaking out about these issues because they've never done a cold-weather Super Bowl," a source told the Post.
A Post source said that weather-related issues can hinder what needs to be a quick assembly and dismantling of a show stage, not to mention hamper a live performance.
"The assembly has to be done a certain way," the Post source said. "It's choreographed and rehearsed so it can be assembled and disassembled as fast as possible. And you just can't assemble the stage and break it down fast enough in the cold."
There is no plan right now for what would go in place of a musical performance, a planning official told the Post.
The idea of a Super Bowl coming to the Metropolitan area was met with mixed reaction. Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco made a controversial statement in the week before the Ravens' victory when he called the idea of a cold-weather Super Bowl "retarded."
"I probably shouldn't say that. I think it's stupid," he said. "If you want a Super Bowl, put a retractable dome on your stadium. Then you can get one. Other than that, I don't really like the idea. I don't think people would react very well to it, or be glad to play anybody in that kind of weather."
MetLife Stadium, the home of the Giants and Jets, will host the NFL's first cold-weather Super Bowl on Feb. 2, 2014.
