Close-Knit Town Of Newtown Comes Together To Begin The Healing Process In Wake Of Horrific Shooting
NEWTOWN, CT(CBSNewYork) -- The close-knit town of Newtown was rocked by tragedy on Friday when a gunman went on a rampage that left twenty children and six adults dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Now the community is banding together to cope with the horrible new reality.
"I feel myself just wandering around and not knowing what to do with myself," Tamara Doherty told CBS 2's Don Champion.
Tamara and her husband Don own a store on Main Street in Newtown, where holiday decorations are up, but the mood is far from celebratory.
On Sunday the Doherty's learned that the daughter of a friend was among the victims.
"I just broke down crying. We have to pace ourselves," Tamara said.
Outside of Sandy Hook Elementary School a memorial to the fallen grows larger every day. One Newtown woman brought flowers to honor the memory of two of her son's baseball teammates.
"We didn't lose two baseball players, we lost two members of a family," she told CBS 2.
It was that family environment that drew residents many of Newtown's residents to the community in the first place, and it is something that many of them are looking to for help in the healing process.
"It's a pretty big town, but considering how big it is parents are actually focused on kids in this town," Pamela Herbstman said, "Not only did this person kill our children but he killed the beauty of this town."
The town of Newtown is now left to grieve, together.
