12 Staffers Placed On Administrative Leave At Clinton Correctional Facility
DANNEMORA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Twelve more employees at the upstate New York prison where two convicted murders escaped more than three weeks ago have been placed on administrative leave -- including the prison's superintendent and his deputy in charge of security.
The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision released a statement Tuesday announcing three members of Clinton Correctional Facility's executive team and nine security guards had been penalized.
The department said as a new leadership team transitions this week, Assistant Commissioner for Correctional Facilities James O'Gorman will oversee the prison.
"Staffing for the security positions will be addressed through procedures outlined in the union contract," the statement said in part.
The move comes as part of an ongoing review of the June 6 escape by Richard Matt and David Sweat.
Matt was killed by authorities last Friday and Sweat was wounded by a bullet and captured Sunday.
Officials at Albany Medical Center say Sweat is improving and that he is now listed in fair condition. His condition was previously listed as serious.
Sweat is expected to stay at the hospital for a few days while his condition stabilizes. The hospital won't release details of his injuries because of privacy laws.
The department didn't identify the suspended staff.
