FBI Launches Probe Into Clinton Foundation Following Corruption Allegations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There was word Friday, that the federal government is investigating the Clinton Foundation.

The information came to light as a new tell-all book hit store shelves with explosive allegations about President Trump.

At Book Culture on Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side, phones were ringing off the hook and copies of Fire And Fury by Michael Wolff have been flying off the shelves.

"Well first of all I was afraid it was gonna sell out, so I thought it was a great idea to call ahead and of course I want to read it," one customer said.

The publication date was moved up a week because of huge demand.

"I've been watching the news a lot in the last few days, and I know it's controversial," Iris Georgia said.

"You don't know how much is really true, and you don't know what's verified and unverified," Robert Grant added.

President Trump ducked questions shouted to him as he left the White House on Friday, though he's already on record bashing the book's claims.

"Full of lies, misrepresentations, and sources that don't exist," he tweeted.

Author Michael Wolff took to the airwaves to fire back.

"I have recordings, I have notes. I am certainly, in absolutely every way, comfortable with everything I've reported in this book," he said.

The book portrays a dysfunctional White House, and the president as petty and petulant. It draws heavily on quotes from former Advisor Steve Bannon, who suggests Donald Trump Junior was treasonous by meeting with Russians at Trump tower.

The president had his lawyers send a cease and desist order to the publisher threatening legal action. Wolff said that's a plus.

In the meantime, the FBI is actively investigating the Clinton Foundation over allegations of corruption related to the charity of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

It wants to know if donors got special access when Hillary was secretary of state.

It's unclear what, if any, new evidence ignited the current federal investigation after an initial probe had stalled prior to the 2016 election.

A spokesman for Clinton called the investigation a sham and the foundation said that time after time the allegations have proven to be false.
